The river IJssel
at the mysterious tiny village of Zalk
The Saint Nikolaas church of Zalk at the left is from the
14th century.
The tower is very likely much older.
The area looks very peaceful now, but the history is
different!
Saint Nikolaas is the protector of the sailing people
and the children.
Many castles were standing here.
Old maps indicates at least four in visible distance.
All four castles were owned by four criminal families
of knights.
The biggest castle was the infamous castle of
Buckhorst.
Those knights robbed passers by and boats on the
river.
All four castles have been destroyed.
Inundations were often fatal.
Nobody came for the rescue.
In 1926 during flooding in the whole country
also the village of Zalk was flooded by a breach in
the dyke.
But this peaceful village was build up again.
All this history somehow is feelable.
