New Healthy
Insurance Organisations
A
Different Approach
We are now
living in a new century,
so why not
approach 'health coverage' in a different way,
from a
different frame of mind?
Currently
many health or sickness insurance companies
give money
to cover the cost of medical doctors,
hospital
care, therapy and
in some
cases medicine or medical supplies
only when
they are needed.
Healthy
Insurance to be Surely Healthy
Instead of
approaching this from a non-healthy
or sick
standpoint, why not approach it from the other side,
from a
healthy standpoint.
The idea
is that there would be
a new kind
of insurance company
that
insures that people stay healthy or
become
healthy by being a member.
Presently
there are many kinds of insurance companies
for a
variety of "What if" or "just in case" situations.
Since all
companies exist to make a profit
it is not
surprising that they hope
that
people will not make any or many claims against their policy.
But are
people really happy with them?
Do they
actually help to keep or make people healthy?
I am just
presenting questions to think about.
Some
people may answer yes and others no.
But I
wonder if people would be happier
with
another approach to health care.
What's
in a Name?
I propose that
instead of calling
this new
idea an insurance company,
that it be
called an Assurance
Organisation.
The
purpose of this organisation is to assure
that you
achieve and maintain good health.
Instead of
calling it a company it would be
an
organisation which has members.
Clients
would be called members, likening it to being
a member
of a health club, thereby implying
that it is
the co-responsibility of the members
to
participate in assuring
their own
health process continues.
I realize
that some of the suggestions
presented
here are being partly offered;
namely
health lectures offered by health companies
and
membership in the local YMCA.
What I am
suggesting is to take this many steps further.
Alternative
Health Care
How about
having healthy insurance companies
that pay
for alternative health care?
No, not
just any kind of care but for health practioners
who have a
certain degree of success
and for
those who are educated in a specific field.
For
example, it could cover naturalpathy, homeopathy,
chiropactic
and some other therapies
that have
shown success in curing people.
Employed
by Assurance Organisations
Doctors
would be paid a yearly wage
from an
insurance company
who also
paid for their medical education.
These doctors
would get paid to treat
a certain number of people who they must keep
healthy.
Their rate
of pay would be determined on
how many
people they keep healthy or make healthy.
All of the
doctors would get
a similar
demographic group to treat.
The same
would apply to a naturalpath,
homeopath
or any other health practioner
employed
by this organisation.
There
would also be a gynecologist
employed
to answer these needs.
And there
would be a midwife available
to anyone
who wanted to opt for this service.
Sometimes
instead of a doctor,
one may
only need to consult with a nurse.
A nurse
would also be 'on staff' to attend to
these
questions or needs.
This would
save precious time for the doctors
who would
handle more complicated issues.
The nurse
would also give lectures to the members.
There
could also be different types of nurses
for
different groups of people.
For
example, a special nurse for people over 70,
or for
babies or for women.
A
nutritionist would also be 'on staff'
to instruct
or advise people
to eat
properly either individually or in a lecture.
Discounts
People who
make an extra effort to be
and stay
healthy should be rewarded for doing so.
People who
do not smoke would receive
a discount
on their health insurance policy.
It is a
known fact that insurance companies
have to
pay more money for the care of smokers.
People who
are not overweight (within 10 pounds)
would
receive a discount on their health insurance.
Obese
people cost the insurance companies extra money.
Those who
manage to keep themselves
within an
average weight range would be rewarded for this.
For every, say, 10 pounds they are overweight,
they would
have to pay extra.
How about
giving people who exercise
at least 3
times a week a discount for working
to keep
themselves healthy.
They work
hard to do this and take the time out
of a busy
schedule to do this, so why not reward them.
Prevention
"An
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cures."
Prevention through Movement
This new
insurance organisation would set up
"Assurance
Gyms" that are free for members
who would
be issued a card that is stamped
in some
way to show that they are using the facilities
either for
swimming, walking, rowing or
some other
health promoting activity.
A physical
trainer who instructs members on
how to
train for their body type would also be available
both for
private instruction and for regular lectures.
Several
kinds of fitness classes would also be offered for free.
This way even if people are overweight,
they can
be given a discount for efforting
to slim
down or improve their condition.
Health
Lectures
Healthy
Assurance Organisations could host
free
lectures about being Heart Healthy,
cancer-free,
physically fit, nutrition, suppliments,
vitamins,
the right food, exercise, homeopathy, naturalpathy, and more.
A client could have a card with these lectures
on it
and get a stamp for every lecture s/he
attended.
Then
again, a discount would be offered for every lecture
attended
or for a certain number attended each year especially
if it
related to their particular health issue.
They
should be rewarded for efforting to keep informed.
Mid-wives
and Birthing Houses
Mothers-to-be
would be incouraged to go
to a
mid-wife and have their babies at home
like they
do in the Netherlands who have a low infant mortality rate.
This would also bring down the cost of giving
birth
in hospitals which, at the moment,
are not
the most healthy places to birth a baby in.
Hospitals were set up to help people
who were
sick or damaged. Another possibility would be
to have
separate Birthing Houses where women would go
to give
birth or to be instructed on
how to
care for their new-born babies.
DE-STRESS
Since many
health issues are either caused
or
aggravated by stress, it would be a healthy idea to teach people
how to
de-stress.
The
Healthy Assurance organisations
would
offer workshops and classes on
how to
de-stress or relax.
They could
be either just de-stress classes,
meditation classes, yoga classes
or any
combination of these.
Other
types of classes that could be
free may
include: T'ai Chi, Chi Gong,
Breathing
for Health or some other martial art courses.
Creating
a Healthy Society
If there
were a health assurance organisation
that
actually encouraged people to BECOME healthy
and STAY
healthy, they would save a lot of money
in doctors
expenses, medicines and hospital stays.
And since
there is a shortage of doctors in many places,
this could
be a good solution to ease that problem.
It would
also save time for the general population
since
instead of going to a doctor or hospital or popping pills,
people
would be learning how to take better care
of their
bodies and de-stress at the same time.
It would
give people a sense of responsibility
in regard
to their own health instead of forgetting about it
and going
to a doctor later when there is so much damage
that it
takes many tests, doctor visits, pills, pills and more pills,
hospital stays or other intervention to heal
what has
been damaged over the years.
Rate
them for Success
For
centuries people have gone to doctors
but what
kind of statistics have we seen
on their
actual rate of cure?
Wouldn't it
be wise to have doctors rated on their rate
of cure or
success? Perhaps it would be wiser to give
them a
salary based on their rate of success?
How many
doctors have cured people of cancer?
What are
the real statistics on this?
Isn't this
something we have a right to know?
It is only
normal to want
the best
care for ourselves and our families.
Health
practioners of all persuasions
including
dentists could be rated based
on their
success rate? An honest health practioner
would
surely love to be recognized as such.
Medicines
could be rated on their successful rate
of cure
vs. their degree of the supression of symptoms?
This could
be listed on an assurance organisation website
so that members could evaluate medicines
they may
be taking or instructed to take.
Hospitals
could be rated on their rate of mortality,
their rate of curing people,
cleanliness,
germs, bed-side manner and more?
When a
second opinion is needed,
one could
easily go to another health practioner
at the same
facility or at another branch.
This way
there would be no or little chance
for a
person to be operated on if there was no real need.
The 'well-care' of the member would be of
prime concern.
Assurance
organisations would put
their rate
of success on their websites.
This way
the public would be able to see
how well
they are doing. In this way,
the
assurance organisations would make
every
effort to have honest
and
competent health practioners
who really
make a difference in the lives of their members.
Taking Pride in Responsibility
The
Assurance organisation takes pride
in
creating the best possible team to assure
the health
and well-care of its clients.
Members
are also encouraged to be co-responsible
for their
own health and well-care.
Such a
co-operative effort could
only mean
better results for all involved.
